Swan House is an original architectural work of art sitting in a quiet upscale Hillside neighborhood (paved roads), overlooking the city of Anchorage, with Mt. McKinley as a backdrop. Swan House was titled "a trophy home" by Travel & Leisure Magazine when it was a Bed & Breakfast from 1991 to 2005. The B & B was also featured in the renown Fodor's America's Best Bed & Breakfasts, 3rd Edition, and Alaska's Best Places. It has been the front page of Anchorage Daily News Sunday "HOMES".
The most unique thing about the house is that is designed to resemble a swan in flight, with wings on two sides. The swan motif is repeated throughout, with an inlaid jade panel of swans over the black walnut and Corian fireplace mantle.
This is an open concept showcase three bedroom, four bathroom home and perfect for those who love to entertain. The 40 foot dining room is ideal for hosting that executive dinner party. There is no other like it and has been classified by the municipality of Anchorage "no comparables".
There are 127 custom windows in different geometrical shapes, along with a 16 foot long bridge that runs through the living area. There are over 160 interior lights and 58 exterior, including theatrical stairway lighting and 240 feet of track lighting throughout. The exterior is all heartwood redwood; inside, light oak predominates. The floors are hardwood oak planking with walnut pegs and frame the main room's brand new beige carpeting.
The kitchen was remodeled in 2007 with all custom stainless appliances; i.e. Thermadore extra wide double ovens, built-in Thermadore stainless steel refrigerator, gas cooktop, Miele dishwasher, trash compactor, bright yellow Kohler deep sink with Grohe faucets; a chef's delight! The warm hardwood oak floor keep the custom look, yet are also practical and easy to clean with their Swedish floor finish.
Over the main entry inside the home in the arctic entry is a custom artist's designed window made entirely of semi-precious stones, entitled "Scene Inside a Blue Diamond". This window is a scene of a tundra swan landing on an Alaskan lake and was especially made for the home. It consists of Alaskan jade, lapis, gold tailings, marble, rose quartz, amethyst, and onyx (shown in slide show). The home has been lovingly cared for and maintained since it was built in 1985. It took 22 months to build with non-stop construction.
Valli Vue is the neighborhood and Home Owners Association. Dues are $420 per year including community well (water) and road maintenance (plowing). The water has been tested annually and has one of the highest ratings in the country.
The property features a guest chalet with a full bathroom. There is also a heated studio or shop and a side shed. Lots of storage room and expansive paved driveway!
